DirecTV (trademarked as "DIRECTV") is a direct broadcast satellite (DBS)
service based in El Segundo, California, USA, that transmits digital satellite television
and audio to households in the United States, the Caribbean and Latin America except for Mexico.
Its primary competitors are Dish Network and cable providers.
DirecTV is owned by DirecTV Group, which was controlled by News Corporation. In November 2006,
News Corp. has reportedly agreed to transfer its interest in DirecTV Group to
John Malone's Liberty Media. In return it will buy back Liberty's shares in News Corp.
The News Corporation remains its largest shareholder at this time.
In addition to consumers, DirecTV offers service to bars, restaurants, hotels, dorms,
and hospitals through their DirecTV for business service. The company also offers mobile
service for cars, boats, and RVs (DirecTV Mobile) as well as aircraft (DirecTV Airborne)
in cooperation with Connexion by Boeing.
Digital cable is a type of cable television distribution using digital video compression.
The technology was developed by Motorola.
Digital cable is used by cable distributors to increase the variety of programming available on
their networks, using video compression to transfer more channels through their cable networks
already in place. The use of the digital technology also adds the functionality of the cable box
to have two-way communication, allowing for the purchasing of pay-per-view programming without
use of a phone line, in addition to video on demand services and a secure signal.
